I stared at the golden apple in my hands, surprised by the literal and symbolic weight of the iconic item. It was funny how my whole world revolved around these and this was the first time I was actually in a position to hand one out.

Atticus appeared next to me, gesturing to the set. “Ready?”

“No.”

“Have you decided if you’re going to hand her the apple or not?” he inquired.

I shook my head curtly. “I don’t know yet. I had fun on our last date and we’re actually very compatible, I can see that without reading our match profiles. I can’t think of a good reason not to go on a second date with her.”

“Sounds like you’re overthinking this. If you had a good time, why not see where it goes?” my best friend asked kindly.

“That does make sense, doesn’t it?” I said, staring at the other side of the set where make-up was putting the finishing touches on Cora. After we got over the Aphrodite hurdle, it was easy to see why Helena picked her for me. She was smart and well-spoken, with similar worldviews to mine. A perfect match on paper that I could see translate into real life.

So why did I have to talk myself into it? Why was I filled with doubt and hesitation when the decision should be so easy?

Atticus tensed and I followed his gaze, landing on Dimitri arriving on set.

“What’s he doing here?” I remarked, knowing full well there was no reason for him to be here. He worked in the PR department, they had very little to do with the actual filming of episodes.

“I’ll go see what he wants,” Atticus muttered as he went over to speak to his husband.

I returned my gaze to the golden apple, twirling it and rubbing away the smudges from my fingers. My distorted reflection seemed disappointed with myself and considering Cora was just on the other side of the room, I conjured a smile to cover up my turmoil.

“Hey!” a light chipper voice said from over my shoulder.

Even though I recognised the sound immediately, Helena’s sudden proximity made me jump and the apple slipped from my hand, thudding to the ground. The other woman dove after it, a blur of blonde chasing after gold.

My breath hitched as she turned, golden apple in hand. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”

I stared at the woman in front of me, stunned by how beautiful and perfect she looked with the apple in her possession. It wasn’t just that, it was everything about her. Her open face, her curious and warm eyes, the slight smile on her pink lips.

Butterflies erupted in my stomach as she handed the apple back, our fingers touching for a moment longer than strictly necessary.

This was it, this was how it was meant to feel.

Helena tilted her head in curiosity. “Anastasia? You okay?”

I swallowed the sea of feelings and nodded, steadying my voice. “Yes, I’m okay. Hi, what are you doing here?”

“I wanted to come see how things had developed, of course.
